Walter Scott Chardonnay, La Combe Verte

2016 Chardonnay, La Combe Verte, Willamette Valley
SOLD OUT - 340 cases
$28.00

Famed Burgundy importer Becky Wasserman was once quoted in Wine Spectator saying, “You can always judge a great Domaine by the quality of their Bourgogne bottling.” These are words we LIVE by. At Walter Scott, we put the same care and attention to detail into our two Willamette Valley wines as we do our single vineyard selections. The La Combe Verte bottlings are the foundation for every choice we make in the winery, directly reflecting our reputation, philosophy, and lifestyle.

La Combe Verte translates to The Green Fault or The Green Valley. This phrase is a tribute both to the incredible Willamette Valley in which we are lucky to produce wine, and the amazing team at Patricia Green Cellars, whom without their support we would never have been able to start Walter Scott. Essentially, it is Patricia Green Cellar's "fault" that we were able to start this project.

We believe in Willamette Valley Chardonnay. This classic varietal has an important place in our region and at Walter Scott, not in the replication of other inspirational regions, but in its own distinctive style, with its own compelling voice. Chardonnay is a grape, which can translate our unique geology in the same way Pinot noir can. Through thoughtful farming and cellar practices, we strive to allow Chardonnay to reach its powerful Oregonian potential.

La Combe Verte is a blend of some of our favorite vineyards, all fermented and aged in oak for 10 months with 100% native yeast fermentation and full malolactic conversion. Our Chardonnay is indicative of a light touch in the cellar, seeing about 20% new wood during barrel aging and very little bâtonnage. The wine is lightly fined and filtered prior to bottling to brighten aromatics and give us a polished finish. The result is an illuminating style of chardonnay with lots of citrus notes, green apple and a mineral note on the palate.

For the 2016 vintage, La Combe Verte is composed primarily from Eola-Amity Hills sources, with barrels of Vojtilla and Freedom Hill Vineyards added in order to thoughtfully paint our unique picture of the Willamette Valley. This Pinot Noir is 15% whole cluster, fermented with ambient yeast, and aged in barrel for 10 months with 30% new oak barrels.

The resulting wine is a serious and beautiful example of the 2016 vintage, layered with power and structure giving this wine immediate appeal, alongside the ability to be tucked into your cellar for several years. Layers of red cherries, plums & spicy earth fill the nose. The fruit, tannins and acid all come together to make the wine our version of the complete package.

Walter Scott, Cuvee Ruth, Eola-Amity Hills

2016 Pinot Noir, Cuvee Ruth, Eola-Amity Hills
350 cases
$40.00

Each year we craft a very special wine that both reflects the Walter Scott style and captures the personality of the vintage. With the 2016 Cuvée Ruth, we combined our select barrels from some of the best vineyards in Oregon to make up this Pinot Noir, including Seven Springs, Sojourner, and Temperance Hill. We also blended into to this cuvée the little known- but not to be underestimated- Lewman Vineyard, a beautiful site adjacent to our winery. 2016 Cuvée Ruth has both red and black fruit notes layered throughout, the power and depth that the individual sites famously achieve, with an overall elegance and polish evoked by the blending of the sites.

These iconic vineyards gave us a blend of Pommard, Wadenswill and Dijon clones, which we then fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 10 months in French oak barrels- 30% of them new. The wine is unfined and unfiltered.

Cuvée Ruth is a wine dedicated to the memory of Ruth and Irv Kantor, our partner Sue's parents, showing tribute to Sue & Andy for helping us to realize our dreams.

2015 Pinot Noir Sojourner - Cropped

2015 Pinot Noir Sojourner Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills
300 cases
$50.00

On the southern end of the Eola-Amity Hills, facing west towards the coast range sits the Sojourner Vineyard. At 650 feet in elevation, the site overlooks the valley and surrounding vineyards. After over 30 years with Eola Springs Vineyard, Denny found the Sojourner property and developed it into an incredible 16 acres planted to three clones of Pinot Noir: Dijon 115, Pommard and Wadenswill and 3.26 acres of Chardonnay! The soils are a rocky, volcanic clay with lots of round stones littered throughout.

The clones are Dijon 115, Pommard and Wadenswill, all co-fermented to give a complete portrait of the vineyard site. The wine is all wild berries layered with delicate spice with intense mineral aromas. The palate is quite gripping with medium tannins leading to a beautiful, complex & vibrant finish. Fermentation is done with ambient yeasts and then aged for 15 months in barrel, all French oak with 40% new oak in the final blend.

2015 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill - Cropped

2015 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley
325 cases
$50.00

In 2012 we were thrilled to get grapes from the iconic Freedom Hill Vineyard, which Ken had worked with through St. Innocent for over 10 years. The vineyard was planted in 1982 by Dan and Helen Dusschee who own and farm the vineyard sustainably with their son Dustin. Located in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range, the Freedom Hill Vineyard is planted on Bellpine loam soils. The soils coupled with meticulous farming, create consistent, structured and powerful wines.

Freedom Hill consistently delivers intense smoky, black fruit and brown spice aromas with just a hint of violet. Palate is medium weight with round, ripe tannins leading to a savory pit cherry, blackberry finish. Lots of power, but never lacking in finesse. Fermentation is done with ambient yeasts and then aged for 15 months in barrel, all French oak with 40% new oak in the final blend.

2015 Chardonnay Freedom Hill - Cropped

2015 Chardonnay, Freedom Hill Vineyard, Willamette Valley
SOLD OUT - 150 cases
$50.00

The Dusschee Family has been growing Chardonnay longer than most, putting lots of care into growing the best fruit possible. In 2012 we were lucky enough to start working with their fruit, getting access to one acre of Chardonnay and one acre of Pinot Noir. After many years working with this vineyard alongside Mark Vlossak, Ken was thrilled. Mark used to say this site was very 'Chablis-like'. We are starting to agree....

The 2015 has delicate aromas of fennel, yellow flowers and mixed citrus. The palate is all finesse, with juicy acidity and a long minerally finish.

This wine was fermented and aged in a new Puncheon and four neutral barrels for 11 months with 100% native yeast fermentation and minimal bâtonnage. The wine was blended and finished in stainless steel for an additional 3 months.

2015 Chardonnay X Novo - Cropped

2015 Chardonnay, X Novo Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills
SOLD OUT - 200 cases
$50.00

In 2010 Craig & Robin Williams, of California Cabernet fame, came to Oregon and purchased a few pieces of land in the Eola-Amity Hills and began planting vineyards. What they did would turn heads. For example, the Chardonnay block that we are honored to work with is planted to fifteen different clones of Chardonnay! FIFTEEN!!! It is one of the most unique sites in Oregon, if not the west coast.

The wine has an incredible aromatic intensity leaning towards, lemongrass, ginger, tangerine and mango skin. On the palate it has beautiful balance, with good density and a strong sense of minerality leading to a long finish.

This wine was fermented and aged in a new Puncheon, a second fill Puncheon and a few neutral barrels for 11 months with 100% native yeast fermentation and minimal bâtonnage. The wine was blended and finished in stainless steel for an additional 3 months.

2015 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill - Cropped

2015 Pinot Noir, Temperance Hill Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills
SOLD OUT - 100 cases
$50.00

Temperance Hill sits on the crown of the Eola-Amity Hills, at elevations ranging from 600 to 900 feet. The site is exposed to cool afternoon marine breezes that define the wines and contribute to late ripening. This fruit is always the last to arrive during harvest, often times up to a week later then everything else.

Temperance Hill sings of the savory qualities we expect from this high elevation Eola-Amity Hills vineyard with signature dried sage, rosemary blossom and crushed raspberry. The wine has beautiful elegance and density with high toned raspberry and huckleberry fruit, finishing with juicy acidity and a complex finish given to the wine by the 24 year old vines of this block. Fermentation is done with ambient yeasts and then aged for 15 months in barrel, all French oak with 40% new oak in the final blend.

2015 Pinot Noir Clos des Oiseaux - Cropped

2015 Pinot Noir Clos des Oiseaux, Eola-Amity Hills
SOLD OUT - 275 cases
$50.00

In 2011 we began leasing a beautiful 2.8 acre vineyard on the South East slope of the Eola-Amity Hills off of Spring Valley Road. Today the land is owned by Kecia & John Keller, who upon falling in love with the site, purchased it and moved back to Oregon in the Fall of 2013. The vineyard is Organically farmed, with Ken doing the majority of the tractor work, sprays and helping with the hand work thanks to the amazing direction of Ryan Hannaford, an incredible friend and Viticulturist.

The wine always leads with great aromatics leaning towards asian spices, Sweet kirsch and crushed strawberry fruits gently layered with subtle floral notes. Due to the deep Jory soil making up more than half of this site the wine tends to be quite lush, almost opulent with medium tannins and a long elegant finish. Fermentation is done with ambient yeasts and then aged for 15 months in barrel, all French oak with 40% new oak in the final blend.

2015 Pinot Noir Dubay - Cropped

2015 Dubay Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills
SOLD OUT - 125 cases
$50.00

On the east slope of the Eoal-Amity bills sits a crazy, steep, rocky vineyard called Dubay. This epic little vineyard is farmed by a great friend and vineyard whisperer, Ryan Hannaford. He has to use a crawler to spray and do tractor work, but nothing great is ever easy. We get one acre block from this site, which yields somewhere around 1.6 tons in 2014. The wine is NUTTY GOOD! It has tension and power with brambly fruit characters, classic of the region. Layers and layers and a crazy finish.

Fermentation is done with ambient yeasts and then aged for 15 months in barrel, all French oak with 40% new in the final blend.
The wine is unfined and unfiltered.

2015 Pinot Noir Seven Springs - Cropped

2015 Seven Springs Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills
SOLD OUT  -  125 cases
$65.00

Widely considered one of the best vineyards in the Willamette Valley. We were honored to be selected to work with this famed vineyard, one of only a few wineries outside of the estate holder, Evening Land. We owe thanks to Rajat Parr for believing in what we are doing and trusting us with this fruit. Walter Scott sources one acre from the original 1983 plantings of un-grafted Pinot Noir vines found in the lower half of the vineyard.

The wine is pure and classy, layered with subtle purple flowers, huckleberry and cassis aromas. The palate has great tension, full of juicy red fruits & delicate spice leading to a long complicated finish, provided by the 34 year old vines.

Fermentation is done with ambient yeasts and then aged for 15 months in barrel, all French oak with 40% new in the final blend.
The wine is unfined and unfiltered.

2015 Los Muertos - Cropped

2015 Los Muertos, Eola-Amity Hills
SOLD OUT - 100 cases
$85.00

Dia de los Muertos is the holiday for remembering and honoring those who have passed. Walter Scott is celebrating the un-grafted vines that defined our industry, that defined our region, by allowing the dead to live again in our hearts through this wine.

Los Muertos is a crazy co-fermentation of our 3 oldest vineyards (Dumb Ox, St Augustine & Seven Springs) they are all over 30+ years, un-grafted vines, dry farmed.... and they all had phylloxera and were pulled out after the 2015 harvest. They are all dead. We fell in love with this ferment, and then watched it in barrel. It is unreal. Classic Oregon, power, intensity, grace. And we can NEVER recreate it as all of the vineyards are gone. So we bottled it and are putting it on a black label with Day of the Dead skulls on it and celebrating the long list vineyards that helped shape Oregon's wine future.
